Career change: Similarities between love and choosing your ideal career path

love your ideal careerReality Shows never cease to surprise me … in a bad way.

The latest crazy idea I’ve seen advertised is a show called “Blind date”, where a couple of total strangers get married on their first date.

Can you imagine?
They haven’t even had time to feel any kind of physical attraction, much less to get to know each other enough to believe they could enjoy sharing their lives together.

Call me old fashioned but way before I even considered getting married to whom is now my hubby, we knew each other pretty well (and I guess 16 happy years together mean we did something right when we chose each other)

While this show is probably only fiction, and nobody gets married with anyone, the truth is we tend to approach our career choices in a very similar fashion.

The “What-career-would-suit-me” question carries a lot of wisdom in itself, because it acknowledges the fact that some careers WON’T be the right fit for you.

Ask anyone who’s ever felt trapped in a soul sucking job and they will confirm you that some careers choices will lead you to disappointment and frustration.

But how do you find the careers that would suit you like a glove?

The path of congruency: How do you know if you are on the right path?

Many people have a simplistic idea about what finding their path really means.

But as I mentioned in The 3 paths of Purpose, we are really walking 3 different paths at the same time:
-The path of congruency
-The path of growth and
-the path of contribution.

In this interview Oprah asks Caroline Myss how can anyone know when they are on the right path. And to me, what Caroline is describing here is the Path of Congruency.

I’ll let Caroline explain, in this short video, what walking the path of congruency looks like Continue reading

Find your Purpose series (part 3): The Path of Contribution

There is an interesting fact about elderly people.
If you ask them what knowledge they’d love to pass onto younger generations, most of them would say some version of:
“Life is short. So find something you really care about, and focus wholeheartedly on it.”
“Spend more time with the people you love, and don’t take disagreements with them too seriously.” Or…
”Love is all that matters, so find something you love doing and be with those you love”

Maybe that is the best possible definition of life purpose: To do what you love and be with those you love.

And yet, most of us want to find a purpose that is much more specific than that: Continue reading

Path Pointer #2: Don’t get caught up in semantics

Have you already found your passion? Because not knowing what you’re passionate about is one the biggest stumbling blocks people encounter in their journey to doing what they love.

It’s something so foundational (and frustrating) that keeps most of us stuck for more than we would be willing to admit.

-“But why, Charo?” -you may be wondering- “why is it s hard to find what I’m passionate about?”
Glad you asked, cause that’s exactly what I’ll share with you in the audio today.

Find your Path: Where should you start?

If you’ve ever felt trapped in a soulless job, (you may be in that very same situation right now), you belong to a growing number of people who share the dream of living a meaningful life of freedom, passion and contribution.

And yet, you may still be stuck because you lack clarity about what that thing you’d love to do really is. Or you already have an idea, even if still is a bit vague, but you are paralized by doubts and concerns about the question: “If I follow my dream, will I still be able to pay my bills?”

If you are in any of these two situations, where do you start?

Find your Purpose series (part 2): The 3 paths of purpose

In the previous article the number one mistake people make when searching for their purpose I talked about why so many people have a hard time finding their purpose.

(If you still haven’t read it, I encourage you to go read that one first so this article makes more sense to you.)

I also mentioned that your purpose is much more richer and complex than you ever imagined. In fact, the way I see your purpose, or every body else’s purpose, is by looking at it as a 3 fold path. 3 Paths you walk in Continue reading

Find your purpose series (part 1): The number one mistake people make when searching for their life purpose

We want to spend our lives in a meaningful way, doing what we love, helping others, or helping the planet… In short, we all want to live our purpose and do what we love, right?

But if we all come with a life purpose, why is it then so elusive to find? Or at least that’s what it looks like, since the most common question people ask me is this:  “How do I find my purpose?”

The reason why we have such a hard time finding our purpose is that we are Continue reading
